I'm now quite confused, too. I know only the abbreviation TOEFL for the exam, like Boss. I still don't understand what TEFL means...

TEFL still means "teaching English foreign language".

Tomaszewski

So it simply covers teachers of English who are not native speakers... Am I right?

No - teaching English to students who are not native speakers and live in countries where English is not the daily language. It's a job which can also be done by a good non-native speaker, though naturally that's a bit more difficult.

Well, I know the process you described as TOEFL... So we mean probably the same and TOEFL and TEFL is the same... /forum/images/graemlins/lol.gif

how do you mean difficult? i admit it might be a bit more difficult to find a teaching job, when you`re non-native. anyway I had no problems finding one, since China is in lack of foreign teachers and desperate to hire `white faces`. But I guess it would be harder to find a TEFL job in CZ or other western countries.
as for being a non-native English teacher, I think it also has some advantages such as:
- I`m kind of `in the same boat` as my students. I once had to study English as they are doing now. when they have a native in front of them, they might easily think `yeah right, for you it`s easy, you don`t know what we`re going through`
- in overall I do know more about grammar than natives, since I had to study it myself, whereas natives don`t study English grammar, at least not in that way necessary to be able to speak the language.
In the beginning I had a kind of complex of not being a native, but I`m over it.

Yes, but I'm afraid your reply shows exactly what I meant about the greater difficulty a non-native speaker faces. We're not LOOKING for an EFL teacher, but for a TEFL trainer. As such, you're not 'in the same boat' as your trainees, most of whom are UK or US natives.

ah got it know, I`m not of the brightest when it comes to abbreviations. /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif
so you`re looking for somebody to give a TEFL course to people who want to become EFL teachers??

hm, now I can see your point too. That would be really different from TOEFL. I must admit I ve never heard of that.

Katie,

Is the job offer still active?
I will come to work in Brno this month and I want to bring my wife with me... so I'm searching for a job for her... she was an English teacher here in Romania...but I'm not aware that she took any TOEFL tests. She has, for sure, some Brainbench on-line tests and certifications. Would she be suitable for this position ?
