View Full Version : long term visa
HardRock 06-03-2007, 05:25 AM It was shocking that CZ authorities dnt want us to come and work on short term visa. I am a bit confuse , should I need visa to travel in Poland , Austria and Germany if I have valid Czech visa. Let me know if borders are open for foreigner as for EU. I don wanna go for visa again and again to meet my gf in Poland.
Thheizz 06-03-2007, 01:18 PM Well,
The rules depends a lot on the original country you come from....
So I'll need to know that befor i can answer your questions.
HardRock 06-03-2007, 02:08 PM Oh sorry , I missed it to mention. I am from INDIA and gng to join IBM Brno.
Thheizz 07-03-2007, 10:53 AM Well, with an long-term visa for Czech Republic you can traver across the boder (of czech) for a time of 3 month without needing a new visa.
texasjohn 08-03-2007, 06:00 AM Hard Rock,
Until the EU border is moved to Ukraine/Czech and Poland/Czech border, a Czech visa limits you to the Czech Republic only as I understand. I do not know if India passports require a visa to Poland/EU. US passport does not, but I also have Russian employee and she is limited with her business visa at this time and can only come to CR. She is allowed in Poland only as a transient, in other words, train/plane passing through as example with her Czech visa. (Point to make here, they can give you trouble if you are traveling by train and have been known to not let you in Poland without proper visa.) It is easier for her if traveling by train to go to Ukraine (Russian passports do not require visa for Ukraine) and then to the Czech Republic.
Best regards,
Texasjohn
Thheizz 08-03-2007, 01:14 PM Funny is, that's not what I know. I asked something similar to the embassy and that's what I’ve heard.
texasjohn 16-05-2007, 05:20 PM Thheizz, What type of passport do you have? I would be curious. Everything I have recieved from Czech government says the same. Russian passport business visas are only good in Czechia. Texasjohn

suwarn 06-08-2007, 05:36 AM Hello,
I should be on Brno at Mid Sept to satrt work in IBM.
The funny thing is the agency told me that it needs 4 months to get all the required VISA (1 month for work permit and 3 month for long term VISA).
SO basically I won't arrive there on time.
Anyone can help me with your experience? or perhaps any startegy so I could be there on time??
Thanks All...,
texasjohn 06-08-2007, 07:16 AM Suwarn,
What the agency has told you is correct. You can not officially work in the Czech Republic without a work permit unless you are either an EU or Czech Citizen. Depending on your nationality you maybe able to enter the Czech republic without a visa, but assuming this is not the case here are your options:
1) Get a temporary 90 work permit. This takes about 30 days from the Czech Consulate. The best way to get this is to have your work permit. Then you are legal to work. Without your work permit you are limited on this visa to business meetings only. You can not perform any "real" work without your working permit. Keep in mind also that typically work permits are granted with no issues to a company like IBM, but the labor office does not have to do so if they believe IBM could hire an equivalent Czech or EU citizen to do the same job. Politically there have been some issues about the amount of foreigners a company like IBM has hired. The labor office has final decision on granting of work permit and recent changes such as firing of top CzechInvest personnel indicates that the political climate is changing. People are starting to realize that many Czechs are not being hired by the large multinationals who have moved into Brno.
2) Get a 90 day tourist visa. It takes about 1 week. But, officially you can not work on this visa. I would not recommend this, if the labor office checks and you do not have proper documentation, IBM would be fined heavily. A good way to lose your job.
The only true legal way for you to work is to obtain your work permit and then get either the 90 day temporary business visa or the long term visa.

suwarn 06-08-2007, 01:46 PM Hi TexasJohn, Thanks for your great explanation. How about this startegy: 1. I wait for work permit (takes 1 month) 2. then I ask for 90 days business VISA(takes 1 months) 3. In the same time wtih number 2, I ask for long term VISA(which takes 3 months). At least I can save 2 months :) is that possible?? I have never dealt with making VISA before, when I ask for VISA, should I be there in person or can be representated by my colleagues?? Regards.... Suwarn
texasjohn 06-08-2007, 02:15 PM Suwarn,
That will work. You must apply at the Czech consulate in person in your country of origin. They will verify your passport. I would suggest that you apply for your long term visa on the day that you pick up your short term visa. Since short term is 90 days, it takes this long to get your long term visa. This way it only takes you two months. One month to get your working permit and 1 month to get your short term visa. (Our lawyers obtained working permit for one of our employees in 2 weeks during the summer - it typically takes 6 weeks during the summer due to holiday season, but I am not sure your agency can do this.)
We are presently checking out a statement in regards to being able to go to the Czech embassy in Prague 14 days prior to lapse of your 90 day visa, but we do not know if this really works. To be sure, I believe you should plan on a return to your native country after 90 days to obtain your permanent visa.
Hope this helps. Take care. Just curious, you are going to work in Brno? Our office is in Brno and I am familiar with the IBM site here.
